- Other laws: Importing pork products is forbidden, and possession of alcohol is illegal and can result in prison sentences. Homosexual acts and adultery are also illegal and can carry severe sanctions.
Customs and social etiquette
- Dress code: Men should not wear shorts in public. Women are expected to wear non-revealing, loose-fitting clothes in public and should follow current recommendations for dress, which may vary by region and context.
- Public conduct: Public displays of affection are frowned upon. Public behavior should be modest, and it is advisable to avoid loud music and public criticism of political statements.
- Photography: It is illegal to photograph government buildings, military installations, and palaces. It is also recommended to avoid photographing local people.
- Alcohol: Alcohol is banned, and it is illegal to arrive in the country under the influence of alcohol.
- Prayer: The call to prayer occurs five times daily, and many businesses temporarily close during this time.
Gender segregation: While rules have been relaxing, many institutions still have a degree of gender segregation, particularly in social settings.
